3. Isla Fisher Nearly Drowns on Now You See Me
Literally drowning in front of their eyes, the staff finally realized she wasn’t acting and a stunt man came to the rescue.
In performing this harrowing stunt, Fisher was reenacting one of the most famous moments in show business, the “Water Torture Cell” trick of Harry Houdini in which the famous escapist had himself imprisoned in a glass cell full of water.
The performance was so stressful that Houdini sometimes emerged in a state of near-collapse. If her plight had not been detected, Fisher almost certainly would not have been able to escape on her own.
It is safe to assume that her colleagues would have noticed something wrong and rescued her in time to prevent death, but tragic consequences could have happened well before that. Obstruction of air flow causes brain swelling resulting in neurological damage in about 20 percent of near-drowning victims. Heart arrhythmia is another common symptom.
These symptoms could have occurred as soon as water entered the lungs, and the neurologic and cardiologic consequences could have endured for years.
To say that Isla was lucky is clearly an understatement.
