The Scottish heartthrob Gerard Butler loves to surf, but his love for the waves nearly cost him his life.

The horrid surfing accident which almost ended the actor’s life and career happened in 2011.

While filming Chasing Mavericks (a surfing movie), Butler was knocked off his board by a large wave, which then also drove him under the water.

Luckily, the actor didn’t suffer from any permanent injuries, but he sure was shaken and dazed.

When Butler speaks of the accident, he says it was “a pretty close call,” and that it taught him “how hard it is to become a surfer,” while showing him “how dangerous” and “how exciting it is.”
