Sean Penn announced Alejandro González Iñárritu was the winner in the Best Director category at the 87th Oscars by saying, “Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?”

Sean Penn has been known as one of the bad boys of Hollywood, and his behaviour is at times highly inappropriate, but the Internet is not taking the immigrant joke lightly.

People on Twitter are fuming over Penn’s tasteless humor, but truth be told, the actor is really good friends with Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu and this is probably an inside joke.

However, it seemed unsuitable for the film industry’s biggest night and the national television.

Penn and Iñárritu collaborated on Iñárritu’s film “21 Grams” and are said to have another project in the works, so Iñárritu is unlikely to take this personally, but the moment of his name being announced as the Oscar winner was probably ruined.

Iñárritu dedicated his win to all Mexicans saying, “I pray [Mexican immigrants] can be treated with the same dignity and respect of the ones who came before and built this incredible immigrant nation.”
