In the early hours of September the 30th, the 29-year-old Olympic champion Michael Phelps was pulled over by the police for going 84mph in a 45mph zone.

The swimming champion failed a field sobriety test and was subsequently taken to the police station in a Baltimore where he was charged with speeding and driving under the influence.

Lapse In Judgement

After his DUI arrest, Michael Phelps took to Twitter to state his apologies to the fans, and to announce he was going to seek professional help.

“The past few days have been extremely difficult,” Michael wrote.

“I recognize this is not my first lapse in judgement, and I am extremely disappointed with myself. I’m going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself.”

“Swimming is a major part of my life,” Phelps continued, “but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future.”

Deeply Sorry

Soon after he was released, Michael apologized to his friends, fans and followers, stating that he is aware of his mistakes.

“I understand the severity of my actions and I take full responsibility. I know these words may not mean much right now, but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down,” said the Olympian.

This is the second time around that Michael has been arrested for Driving Under the Influence. He was previously charged in Maryland, back in 2004, when he was only 19 years old.
