The most decorated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps, has been given a six-months suspension by USA Swimming after he was arrested for Driving Under the Influence last week, which was his second DUI arrest.

Significant Consequences

Sport’s national governing body and Chuck Wielgus, USA Swimming executive director, said that Michael violated the code of conduct when he was detained for DUI.

“Michael’s conduct was serious and required significant consequences. We endorse and are here to fully support his personal development actions,” stated Chuck Wielgus.

The athlete also won’t be able take part in the world championships in Russia next August, which is considered to be the most important warm-up tournament ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Seeking Professional Help

Just days after this incident, Michael announced via Twitter that he was seeking professional help, and that he realizes his behavior is extremely disappointing for all the nation, especially his fans and followers.

“The past few days have been extremely difficult. I recognize this is not my first lapse in judgment, and I am extremely disappointed with myself. I’m going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself.”

“Swimming is a major part of my life, but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future.”
