The women in Hollywood are fighting what at times seems to be a fruitless battle for equality, but at least they are trying and making sure incidents like these become public knowledge.
The 37-year-old Gyllenhaal shared her feeling regarding the rejection: “It made me feel bad, and then it made feel angry, and then it made me laugh.”
It is by informing the public about discrimination that the women of Hollywood prompted ACLU to request “that state and federal agencies investigate Hollywood studios, networks and talent agencies over gender discrimination.”
Gyllenhaal was discrete enough not to name the film or studio that turned her down, but said she still had hope for women in the film industry.
“A lot of actresses are doing incredible work right now, playing real women, complicated women. I don’t feel despairing at all. And I’m more looking with hope for something fascinating.”
