Despite the fact that Emma Stone is a very friendly and polite celebrity, she and director Cameron Crowe were the main targets of the discontent caused by Stone’s character in the movie “Aloha” earlier this year.
The actress spoke to News.au.com when she said: “I’ve become the butt of many jokes. I’ve learned on a macro level about the insane history of whitewashing in Hollywood and how prevalent the problem truly is. It’s ignited a conversation that’s very important.”
She continued: “There’s a lot of conversation about how we want to see people represented on screen and what we need to change as a business to reflect culture in a clearer way and not in an idealized way. There are some flaws in the system…My eyes have been opened in many ways this year.”
“Aloha’s” director, Cameron Crowe, decided to update his blog with an “heartfelt apology to all who felt this was an odd or misguided casting choice” instead.
Hawaii truly has a really diverse population, and both the cast and the director of “Aloha” were trying to show it with the best intentions. Perhaps the crowd’s reaction was a little over-the-top, or maybe this was really just another case of whitewashing. We’ll never really know…
