Sunday night was a big night for actress Ellen Page and her girlfriend Samantha Thomas as it was the first time the two went out in public together as a couple.

Page and Thomas attended the Toronto Film Festival last night, and although the two girls are known to have been dating for several months now, this was the first time they were seen as an item on the red carpet.

When the reporters asked Ellen why she had decided to go public with their relationship, the 28-year-old actress had the most appropriate answer one can imagine – Ellen just said: “I’m in love. Walking down the carpet holding my girlfriend’s hand is pretty special. It’s pretty awesome,” the Canadian star stated for E! News.

The fresh couple attended the premiere of Ellen’s latest movie called “Freeheld”, a true story about a lesbian couple who fights for equal rights while one of them is also struggling with cancer.

The movie has been quite an important and passionate project for Ellen, who announced she was gay just last year.

The two subsequently headed for a special party held by Vanity Fair, where they met with their close friend, Ruby Rose. Rose recently spoke highly of Ellen and her new movie:

“When your best friend is the most talented, funny, beautiful, generous, humble human being it’s hard to not smile until it hurts. Ellen, I am so proud of you and will always be grateful for everything you are and will always be to me,” Rose wrote on Instagram.

This has been an important year for young and talented Ellen, indeed.
