Biggest career mistakes of movie stars – 15 actors who turned down huge roles

TomSelleck

15. Tom Selleck: Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones

It seems like Harrison Ford was born to play Indiana Jones, but the role was originally intended to go to Tom Selleck who was a huge hit in “Magnum, P.I.” at the time.

The show was reluctant to let their star perform in a movie that was obviously destined to be a mega hit.

The moustached actor was forced to choose between the two roles and decided to honour his original commitment to the TV show.

To add insult to injury, a writer’s strike delayed the production of “Magnum, P.I.” for over six months which would have been enough time to complete filming “Indiana Jones.”

Selleck has admitted that he feels “haunted” by the opportunity he lost, but his career has still been very impressive even if he didn’t get to portray everyone’s favourite archaeologist. Although many people associate the talented actor with films, he has actually had far more success on the small screen.

After “Magnum: P.I.”, Selleck went on to play the role of Dr. Richard Burke on hit TV show “Friends.”

Selleck appeared in multiple episodes as the love interest of Courtney Cox’s character Monica. He has also appeared in successful shows such as “Las Vegas”, “Blue Bloods” and starred in a series of made-for-TV movies entitled “Jesse Stone.”
