14. Will Smith: Neo in The Matrix film franchise
He says that he turned it down because he didn’t understand the movie and knew that he wouldn’t be able to give the role the respect it deserved.
Instead, Smith went on to star in the action comedy “Wild Wild West” and the role of Neo went to Keanu Reeves.
Smith has said that he feels Reeves’ performance fits perfectly within the film and maintains that he wouldn’t have been the right choice.
Smith is not alone in struggling to understand the “Matrix Trilogy”, and the final movie requires multiple viewings with director’s commentary to be able to figure out just what is going on.
Reeves low-key style of acting was a perfect contrast to the fast pace of the futuristic action thrillers. The Canadian actor has faced some heavy criticism for his wooden acting style and poor film choices.

A photo of Reeves looking glum whilst eating a sandwich alone on a park bench spawned one of the most successful internet memes of 2010.
Internet users photoshopped the actor into various photos depicting fun activities such as riding rollercoasters in Disneyland in an effort to cheer up the solemn star. The meme even led to the creation of “Cheer-up Keanu Day” on June 15th .
