Here’s the problem. “Independence Day” was set in 1996.
Today, in 2014, it’s nearly impossible to get a Mac and PC to cooperate with one another or manage to run iPhone software on an Android device, so what makes anyone think that a human-designed laptop could possibly interact with an advanced alien network?
How was a computer programmer from Earth able to construct a virus on an outdated, underpowered computer that was capable of penetrating the alien’s technology in the first place?
How did he even know what language to write the code in? How did he do it so fast? Where in the heck did he get the compiler? That single event took the movie from awesome and engaging to comical and ridiculous. Seriously, aliens don’t have anti-virus software?
