9. Independence Day (1996)

In 1996, aliens come to Earth to rob it of its resources and destroy those who live on it. Fortunately, Earth has Jeff Goldblum and Jeff Goldblum has an old Apple laptop that he can use to upload a virus to the alien mother ship.

The virus, in turn, will disable all of the alien defenses long enough for humanity to use its conventional, inferior weapons to destroy the invaders.

Here’s the problem. “Independence Day” was set in 1996.

Today, in 2014, it’s nearly impossible to get a Mac and PC to cooperate with one another or manage to run iPhone software on an Android device, so what makes anyone think that a human-designed laptop could possibly interact with an advanced alien network?

How was a computer programmer from Earth able to construct a virus on an outdated, underpowered computer that was capable of penetrating the alien’s technology in the first place?

How did he even know what language to write the code in? How did he do it so fast? Where in the heck did he get the compiler? That single event took the movie from awesome and engaging to comical and ridiculous. Seriously, aliens don’t have anti-virus software?
